By around 800 a.d. the Kievan Rus was the dominant force in Rus culture, but the Crimea, and all coastal areas, were dominated by nomadic Turkic peoples, with ancient Greek port settlements scattered along the coast. In 1222 Ghengis Khan invaded the Crimea and defeated the Turks there. In the years that followed, his Golden Horde would conquer the entirety of the Crimea and the Kievan Rus. In 1441, the descendants of Ghengis Khan established a new nation, the Krimean Khanate, encompassing the Crimean peninsula and the Donbas region. In the meantime the center of Rus culture had shifted to Moscow and had slowly pushed the Mongols out of the greater Rus. Former U.S. Marine Brian Berletic, who focuses on geopolitics in Eurasia and hosts the informative Youtube show The New Atlas, joins Useful Idiots this week as Elon Musk and the Trump administration are gutting USAID and attempting to move it under the control of Marco Rubio’s State Department.
Musk claims he’s “dismantling the Deep State.” Berletic, whose years as a marine gave him a harsh awakening about the reality of US hegemony, gives an in-depth analysis of what’s really going on.
He explains why each side is up-in-arms over the issue: Dems are painting USAID as an all-loving agency that is essential to upholding Democracy around the world, while Republicans are crying wokeism by finding relatively trivial expenses in the fine print. Neither, Berletic says, are highlighting the real, and much more nefarious issues with USAID.
“They have not mentioned foreign interference, regime change, subversion, stifling development, and they have not said that they are going to stop any of that.”
“And here's a photo,” he shows us from the U.S. Government Counterinsurgency Guide, drafted in part by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). “Just think about how tone deaf or brazen they are to post this picture. This is a picture of the Philippines, the U.S. conquered the Philippines. There was an uprising because they wanted to be an independent nation. The US military brutally suppressed it. Mass murder, concentration camps. This is all listed on the State Department's website And so they're talking about insurgency, counterinsurgency, and USAID's role in the counterinsurgency process.”

This week, Trump met with a grinning Netanyahu and announced to the world that the US will take over Gaza with the basic intention of making a new Mar-a-Lago in the Middle East. His cultist cronies couldn’t be happier with this proclamation of ethnic cleansing and settler colonialism.
“He puts some very bold, fresh ideas out on the table,” said National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, whose statements were echoed from the White House briefing room to Fox News. We watch a mashup of the GOP talking points, which all sound curiously scripted and identical, ending with the perfect encapsulation from one Fox News host:
“His crazy…might just be crazy genius.”
The plan Trump has put forth is to permanently remove all Palestinians from their homeland and begin building real estate with Israel. Democrats, who for the past year were seemingly fine with the destruction of Gaza and the mass murder of its civilians, are suddenly changing their tune to call out the ethnic cleansing proposal.
MSNBC host and former advisor to Kamala Harris tweeted: “I think now it’s very appropriate to reiterate that elections have consequences.”
We think it’s also appropriate to reiterate that genocides have consequences, and the Biden/Harris administration lost because they supplied the weapons and facilitated the destruction of Gaza. But sure, they never explicitly said they would ethnically cleanse Gaza – so we’ll call that subtler colonialism.
Plus, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy gives all the wrong reasons for keeping USAID, Trump admits we’re using Ukraine for their “rare earths,” and Zelensky wants nukes.
